Clatskanie PUD Receives Second Place Safety Award

Clatskanie People’s Utility District’s continued commitment to safety was recently rewarded with a second place safety award plaque at the annual Northwest Public Power Association (NWPPA) Engineering and Operations Conference. CPUD was the second place winner for the category of public utilities whose employees worked between 41,001 to 72,000 hours in 2013. First place went to Lincoln Electric Cooperative and third place to City of Lompoc.

The NWPPA safety awards are competitive, based upon a review of the number of hours worked within the year (2013) and the number of recordable lost time injury/illness days during that period. NWPPA uses a complex formula to determine which utilities had the lowest total injury and illness rate with lost time workdays compared to the total number of hours worked by all employees. The lost time injury/illness information is gathered each year to report to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), this information is then used on the NWPPA contest form for the safety awards.

Safety is a number one priority for Clatskanie PUD. Many steps are taken to ensure safety among both employees and customers including monthly safety training classes for employees and monthly safety committee meetings. The safety committee works hard to ensure all safety concerns or issues are addressed, and to discuss safety procedures and necessary updates to those procedures. CPUD’s safety record has been outstanding due to all employees understanding the importance of what they have learned in the safety trainings, and then putting that knowledge to use consistently in the field and office.

“I am very proud of our Clatskanie PUD employees’ commitment to safety,” Marc Farmer, General Manager said. “Receiving awards like this second place plaque from NWPPA shows that they consider safety a top priority and their actions reflect that in everything they do.” At the annual safety dinner the Clatskanie PUD Board of Directors also congratulated the employees on receiving the NWPPA safety award, and for their dedication to working safely.
