Cover Contest Results – Public Power Week 2014

Contest runner-up “Electric Car” by Kyli Conant

The results are in from the 2014 CPUD Public Power Week Ruralite Cover Contest

Clatskanie PUD is proud to announce the results of our 1st Annual Public Power Week Cover Contest. The winning cover design was created by Malakai Gray, a Clatskanie Elementary student. There were also two runner-ups chosen, Kyli Conant and Nikiquoia Ausmus, both students at Clatskanie Elementary as well. Their cover designs are featured here on pages 28 & 29.

Our call to artists of all ages and types was answered by 46 contest entries. The only guidelines given for the contest were to design something for the cover of the Clatskanie PUD Ruralite that embodies “What public power means to me”. There were no other restrictions or instructions to impede the creative process of our local artists. Clatskanie PUD was pleased to have three classes from Clatskanie Elementary School, one second grade and two third grades, participate in the contest.

Our volunteer panel of judges was made up of two community members, Elsa Wooley and Kathleen Grove, and two Clatskanie PUD representatives, employee Ian Bledsoe and Board Director Janet Willey. The judges enjoyed going over each entry and carefully considering which ones would make a good cover design. The judges were impressed
with quality of all the entries. Janet Willey commented, “It was a tough decision to make, as there were a lot of really good entries.”

The judges felt that the drawings that won best embodied what public power means to them. From the shining light bulb to the modern idea of a plug-in electric car, it was interesting to see what it meant to the artists to have reliable electricity. There were a lot of cell phones, computers, and electronic entertainment items featured in the designs; but the other common theme among the artists was the basic comforts in their homes. Many of the designs depicted their home with light shining through the windows. “It was fascinating to see the differences come through the drawings, with their perception of what public power does for them”, said judge Ian Bledsoe.

All the contest entries will be on display at the Clatskanie Arts Commission Missoula Children’s Theatre January 23 & 24. Judge Elsa Wooley commented, “The Clatskanie Arts Commission is excited to partner with Clatskanie PUD to promote art in Clatskanie, and is happy to provide an opportunity to display the cover contest entries.” Look for the Clatskanie PUD banner that will have all the art work surrounding it at the Arts Commission event in January held at the Clatskanie Schools.

Clatskanie PUD appreciates the support we received from the three Clatskanie Elementary Classes and all our other contestants in our new annual cover contest. The judges felt that the kids did an excellent job of representing the spirit of what our reliable electric power means to their daily life. Next year’s cover contest will just be open to elementary school age artists, and we hope to encourage more class rooms to participate. Please watch for our Public Power Week advertisements in the Ruralite and local papers next fall. Clatskanie PUD looks forward to sponsoring our young artists and seeing next year’s entries for the cover contest.
