For the second straight year, Clatskanie PUD was recently awarded first place for the Safety Award from the Northwest Public Power Association (NWPPA). Winners were announced at the annual NWPPA Engineering and Operations Conference last month in Spokane. The safety contest award is based upon each utility’s safety contest form which reports the number of recordable injury/illness cases (the incident rate) in 2011 and the lost work days (the severity rate) in 2011.

According to NWPPA, the average incident rate for member utilities decreased from the previous year and participation has increased every year for this annual safety contest. This year, 44 member utilities from throughout the Northwest submitted their application for the contest. The number of entries received determined the categories for the contest. Clatskanie PUD was in the 60,001 – 100,000 hours of exposure category with 85,880 total employee hours of exposure during 2011 with zero recordable work related injuries or illnesses resulting in zero days away from work.

“Safety ranks number one amongst our employees. We want everyone to go home safe every night” explains Greg Booth, General Manager. Many steps are taken to ensure safety at CPUD, including monthly safety training classes for employees and monthly safety committee meetings to discuss safety procedures and address any concerns or issues that may have arisen for employees and/or customers.
